Statement from the Board of Trade on Canada - U.S. Trade Negotiations

The Board of Trade remains supportive of Canada’s response to the ongoing U.S. trade dispute. The breakdown in trade negotiations is deeply disappointing and not the outcome businesses or Canadians had hoped for. As we navigate this continued uncertainty, it is critical that Canada remains unified and focused on protecting our economy, businesses and workers.

We understand the necessity for retaliatory tariffs in this exceptional context. Prime Minister Carney has indicated that the federal government intends to provide support to affected businesses. We urge the government to ensure these measures are timely, accessible and sufficient, with particular consideration for small businesses that may be disproportionately affected by counter-tariffs and ongoing trade disruption.

The Board of Trade will continue to closely monitor developments and advocate for the needs of Newfoundland and Labrador businesses. As this situation evolves, we will remain focused on ensuring the perspectives and challenges of our business community are understood and inform Canada’s response.
