Board of Trade Encouraged by Low Injury Rates Driven by Safer Workplaces
WorkplaceNL has released its 2025 Annual Performance Report, highlighting continued progress in workplace safety across Newfoundland and Labrador. Notably, the province’s lost-time injury rate remained at a record low of 1.2 per 100 workers, while just over 3,800 new injury claims were reported, which is the lowest number on record.
This is encouraging news for both employers and workers and reflects a shared commitment to creating safer workplaces. Employers across the province continue to invest significant time and resources into health and safety, and these results demonstrate the positive impact of those efforts in reducing workplace injuries.
The report also notes that the Injury Fund generated positive investment returns in 2025 and is now funded at 139.5%. As the government has now begun its independent statutory review of the workers’ compensation system, the management of this surplus should be carefully considered in this ongoing process.
To protect the integrity of this independent review, any proposed changes must be brought to the Statutory Review Committee, which includes both worker and employer representatives. This committee is well positioned to assess fund management options using the most current and accurate data available.
This balanced and evidence-based approach supports injured workers, recognizes the efforts of employers to achieve these positive results, and maintains long-term sustainability.
We are committed to championing safe, healthy and thriving workplaces throughout this collaborative process, and look forward to reviewing the results of the committee.
